Clinical laboratories in the United States are in crisis due to workforce shortages, increased laboratory testing needed to sustain patient care, and educational program closures caused by high costs necessary to maintain them. A Department of Labor (DOL) laboratory grant was awarded to Saint Paul College and its industry and educational partners to design innovative approaches to building and growing capacity in the Minnesota clinical laboratory workforce.
The Saint Paul College Department of Labor Laboratory Grant is a current example of a consortium of partners whose aim is to facilitate career advancement for laboratory professionals through program articulation, fast-track, e-learning, and expansion strategies. The Center for Allied Health Program’s role in this consortium is to act as an advisor on how to provide a continuum of education to restore and build articulations between two-year and four-year programs, and to assist in the development of courses that can provide a seamless transition toward B.S. completion.
